Tastefully Brilliant Philadelphia Dining at Square 1682

Square 1682 resides within Philadelphia's Center City, adjacent to Hotel Palomar Philadelphia, and is a tip of the hat to Pennsylvania's founding father William Penn and his insightful creation of the modern city park. In 1682, Mr. Penn created Rittenhouse Square (the "square" in our name) and four other similar plazas in Philadelphia in order to establish urban open spaces in the heart of the city.

Stepping into the future while relying on the rearview mirror of the past, Square 1682's design and operations team created a dining and bar establishment that epitomizes Mr. Penn's big thinking.

Chef Tellez Adds Flavor & Flair to the Square

Square 1682 started by recruiting Chef Guillermo Tellez. Chef translated an earth-circling 20-year career into the signature cuisine he calls New American cooking. It blends his around-the-world adventures into brilliant flavors, textures and tastes that are presented on 40-plus plates, perfect for sharing, exploring and discussing. Perhaps of even greater importance though is Chef's fervent belief in a sustainable, conservationist's cooking ethos. That means foods are sourced locally from Philadelphia farmers and organic produce and meats are the preferred essentials.

Behind the Square 1682 Bar

Likewise, Master Mixologist Jacques Bezuidenhout and Master Sommelier Emily Wines have played essential roles in bringing the bar and lounge into focus. Bezuidenhout's cocktail menu is the fusion of fresh seasonal ingredients with fresh imagination, while keeping the ingredients for those Philly favorites close at hand.

Meanwhile, Wines' list encompasses great values, hidden gems and classic picks. Her selections rest proudly in the cascading two-story glass wine cellar you see upon arrival. Schneider's array of local craft beers, including Dock Street, Dogfish Head, Stoudt's, Troegs, Victory and Yards to name a few, will please the hops, malt and barley crew.

Out of the Box Dining Design

The above ensemble is tied together by designer Dayna Lee's vision. Lee, of Powerstrip Studio in Hollywood, converted Philly's beloved Architects Building (circa 1929) into a stunning space that gives art and architecture free reign. Sculptural wood-encased geometric stairs lead past the bar up to the main dining room, where light streams through floor-to-ceiling windows, and featured chalkboard walls showcase drawings by local artists. The two-story space is dominated by Indian orange, purple and grain mustard, played out in different shades and complemented by rich, deep patterns and textures. And in meeting the LEED standards, Lee selected eco-friendly materials that also serve a high-design function.
